The intervention of Renzo Piano at Cersaie 2009, whose appointment we have anticipated, was a memorable moment in which to discuss architecture, everyday life and the new dynamics of the world of design.
“Architecture is a craft of invention and adventure, not only physical but also of the spirit”, this is the message that Renzo Piano transmitted to the numerous participants of the Lectio Magistralis organized on the occasion of Cersaie 2009 in Bologna, of which we show you an amateur video.
The Genoese architect answered the difficult question, the theme of the Lectio Magistralis “what does it mean to do architecture” ?.
In doing so, he retraced almost fifty years of career through a series of images of his projects, useful for explaining the meaning ofarchitecture, of which, however, he showed mainly construction sites, precisely with the aim of showing not architecture, but making architecture.
Piano then illustrated the choices made for theAuditorium in Rome, the Church of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, the building in Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, the Tjibaou Center for Kanak Culture in Noumea, the Morgan Library and the new headquarters of the New York Times in New York, the Science Museum in San Francisco and the Central St. Giles multifunctional complex in London.
As the architect says, “Making architecture means starting from a sense of necessity. But it is not only the art of building, it is also that of celebrating, of representing. In architecture, the pragmatic world of doing and the imaginative world are confused because the need is confronted with the poetic aspect, that is, with the desire to express oneself ”.
Then it continues with an invitation to young aspiring architects to travel, to observe, to take from the world, because architecture is a frontier art, a pirate art because there is an open face robbery, and therefore a contaminated art.
