Fabrics embroidered in India, woven fabrics in Jordan and terracotta from Thailand, Ikea launches LOKALT, a new collection dedicated to craftsmanship in the world, which will debut in Italy next June.

The LOKALT collection celebrates the combination of craftsmanship and local traditions, with a lively line of hand-crafted textiles and ceramics, the result of the collaboration between a group of young designers from all over the world and the Swedish company.

Amman, Delhi and Bangkok are the cities that inspire the motifs, lines and design of the new collection, with the aim of supporting social entrepreneurs and fostering equality and inclusion for people living in the most disadvantaged regions of the planet.

Ikea has been working alongside social entrepreneurs for several years now to help the most vulnerable people achieve economic independence and improve their living conditions.

But it is the first time that the Swedish company has created a real dedicated line, entrusting it to four local designers in Jordan, Thailand and India, for a modern collection inspired by local craft traditions.

LOKALT designers are the creative duo THINKK, composed of Ploypan Theerachai is Decha Archjananun of Bangkok, Tania Haddad from Amman and the IKEA designer Akanksha Deo who works in Delhi.

Modernity and tradition together
“LOKALT is a collection inspired by local craft traditions, revisited through a modern look,” he says Maria O’Brian, Creative Leader of IKEA Range & Supply. “It is full of interesting details that tell the stories of the places where the products are made,” continues O’Brian. “The pottery are a tribute to the way of serving food in the Thai tradition, i textiles for the house depict daily life in Amman while linings for cushions and rugs are inspired by Indian cultural heritage ”, explains the IKEA Creative Leader.
