Why do pumpkins become lanterns on Halloween – the Jack ‘O lantern story?
The pumpkins with the lanterns, calls Jack-o’-lantern they originate from one Irish legend.
The legend tells of a blacksmith Stingy Jack, drunkard and dissolute, that he sold his soul to the Devil to pay his gambling debts.
On the evening of Halloween, Jack met the Devil and offered him a drink. The latter accepted, to then be able to collect the due.

But Jack, before he left, challenged him, saying that he doubted he could turn into anything he wanted. So the Devil turned into a coin that would pay for Jack’s drink and excess.
But the blacksmith was very smart and quick, so as to take the coin and put it in his pocket, along with a silver cross he possessed, thus preventing the Devil from transforming himself again.
Meanwhile, between Jack and the Devil there was an agreement: the Devil had to leave him alone for a year, and Jack in the meantime had to change his life and redeem himself.
The Devil accepted, but Jack let the time pass without repenting and without caring about his wife, the poor and going to church, as he had proposed.
So when the following year, the Halloween day, the Devil showed up, Jack still managed to mock him, managing to make a pact with him that provided that he would not take him for ten years.
But the following year Jack died and not only was rejected by Heaven, but he showed up in hell, here also the Devil, on the basis of their pact (not respected) rejected him.
When Jack walked away from the gate of hell, the Devil threw a burning ember at him, which Jack placed inside a hollow turnip, to shed light on his eternal wandering in search of a home.
