President of Pininfarina Group, senator for life and engineer, but above all a great designer who revolutionized the technique and development of one of the greatest Italian sectors year after year: that of motoring. Died a few weeks ago Sergio Pininfarina that, just give it engineering and aerodynamic studies applied to bodywork, he based his very personal and unique style by applying it to all sorts of projects. One of all, and perhaps the last one out of his mind, was Madonna of the Star to Riardo, in the province of Caserta, one chapel made according to aesthetic engineering schemes, sinuous shapes in steel that interpenetrate softly. This is the latest design example of a great mind and the only project in the “sacred” sphere of the Pininfarina team.
One of the experiments in which the world of architecture is less accustomed to design is certainly the sacred one. Partly because a place of worship always has certain aesthetic parameters which, in most cases, are not dictated by constructive constraints but rather by symbolic character to be strictly respected so that the place of worship fully assumes its function, thus allowing the designer in a decidedly reduced way to be able to try his hand in the style that is most congenial to him. The other reason is the enormous quantity of places of worship scattered throughout the territory, of enchanting design and inimitable historical taste which, given the quantity, certainly does not require a new investment in the sector. If it is a private individual who wants a new place of worship, in this case a chapel, then the discourse changes, turning into a gesture of profound generosity and being able to benefit all citizens.
The entrepreneur from Campania wanted it Raffaele Parrella which, in the furniture sector, has made its fortune. Already accustomed to works of generosity towards his places with works always aimed at construction for several years. One of the first operations was to give the municipality a building area to allow the construction within the land of houses intended to accommodate a certain number of less well-off families.
The realization of a dream
With the construction of the chapel, however, he crowns a dream that has lasted for several years now. In the time of suns two years indeed it was built the building, with the help of Campania workers who made the latest futuristic project conceived by Pininfarina Extra in Turin concrete.
The generous gesture is to leave Madonna della Stella open to the public and not for private use, so as to allow the inhabitants of Riardo and those of the neighboring town to be able to use it as a place of worship.
The chapel was inaugurated also with an important ceremony on Saturday June 23 at 6.00 pm, to give prestige and visibility to a creative and economic investment project that is rarely seen in this period of crisis and which will now pay homage to its designer, Sergio Pininfarina, as one of the latest projects.
The avant-garde design
Absolutely modern is the design of the Madonna della Stella chapel. Sinuous shapes and articulated that recall, for the curvature of the covering surface, of the curtains in steel soft, which rest on the supporting structure mainly made of concrete classic on sight. The structure can also be reminiscent of the upturned hull of a boat, centrally cut along its entire length by a large one longitudinal glazing which allows the entry of light inside directly from above, creating light beams suggestive that affect the interior furnishings.
About thefurniture, this too was entirely studied from Pininfarina Extra: from the altar, formed by a single block of travertine from Tivoli to the cross of the tabernacle, passing through the seats, the baptismal font and the holy water stoup without neglecting the organ and the lectern on the altar.
In contrast to the hyper-modernity of architecture there is a notable device: the entrepreneur’s desire to leave the surrounding environment unchanged, making private forty hectares of park in the vicinity including hills and woods that surround the structure, crossed by a river.
One last thought in the field of design came with the food design by means of the realization of the cake, made for the inauguration by Salvatore De Riso, directly from the Chef’s Test. The design is a large pyramid made up of mono pyramid portions also. The geometric shape used is a strong concept, recalling the symbol of “rebirth“.
