The Floating Piers is the name of thefloating work by Christo on Lake Iseo. The Bulgarian artist has succeeded where others have only imagined: joining Montisola and the island of San Paolo to the mainland. The project was completed on June 3, at 6.33 pm, and now everything is ready to walk the 4.5 km walkway, built with 200 thousand cubic meters of polyethylene and yellow fabric. The route will obviously and rightly be monitored and dotted with security officers, one every 50 meters. The Floating Piers cost 15 million euros, a figure paid out solely by the artist Christo himself, who dedicated the work to Jeanne-Claude, the wife who passed away in 2009.
How can an artist pay for such a work out of his own pocket and earn nothing? Indeed Christo he is anything but a patron, as his profits derive solely from sketches and drawings. It is no coincidence, therefore, that everyone loves him on the Sebino. There are those who might think that to walk the floating bridge on Lake Iseo you need to pay a fee, maybe a real toll, but that’s not the case: Floating Piers is free and it is open to all, 24 hours a day and there is no need to book ‘the visit’.
Yes, a nice queue will certainly form, because although it is open to everyone, the floating walkway cannot support more than 17 thousand people at the same time. What to do to ‘walk on the waters’ of Lake Iseo? It’s simple, you have to go around this, to Sulzano, the town from which the walkway starts. Do not think to drive straight in front of theChristo’s artwork, because it is forbidden: for the occasion a huge car park has been opened in Rovato, but it is also possible to leave the car in Sarnico, Paratico and Iseo.
Waiting for it to be possible to cross the floating bridge over Lake Iseo, the exhibition of the artist. This is titled “Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Water Projects ”, started in Milan last February and will end in September. His sketches and drawings are exhibited here, including Over the River, the planned project on the Sant’Angelo bridge in Rome. Also on Christo one was opened Photo exhibition “Platek and Christo: light and art” at Le Palafitte di Iseo, inaugurated on 11 June and which will remain open until next 10 July. On this occasion it is possible to see a series of exclusive shots made by Wolfgang Volz.
Meanwhile, in the gallery you can see some images of the walkway that will animate Lake Iseo like never before.
