Among the latest projects signed Norman Foster there are Bodegas Portia, a building conceived and designed for the Spanish wine group Faustino in Ribera del Duero (Burgos), a town about 150 kilometers north of Madrid. This is a surprising one architecture extended over more than 10 thousand square meters of surface and characterized by a three-pointed star shape made through the use of concrete, steel and crystal.
Bodegas Portia is the name of the new project conceived and implemented by Norman Foster for the Spanish wine group Faustino in the Ribera del Duero (Burgos). Costing over 25 million euros, it is a ‘architecture characterized by an original star shape with three points made through the skilful use and combination of concrete, steel and crystal.
The external coating of thebuilding it is obtained through a surface covered with reddish corten steel tiles in perfect chromatic harmony with the surrounding landscape.
The particular shape of the architecture reflects the three main processes employed by the wine group: processing, storage and serving. Here then is that in each of the three volumes a specific phase of production is carried out: fermentation in steel vats, aging in wooden barrels, and finally aging in bottles.
Finally, the wings of the structure are intended to house barrels and bottles which are thus placed in an underground area in order to guarantee the best climatic conditions for the aging of the wine.
