The Municipality of Viterbo launched the “Le Piazze make Center” competition and the B + P Architetti studio won it. It is their best idea to redevelop the streets of the city center and also the squares. The tender promoted last spring had as its object that of studying something innovative to enhance the areas of the center, proposing a coherent path and targeted interventions.
The B + P Architetti studio, by Alessia Bettazzi and Pierluigi Percoco, flanked by collaborators Vanessa Cencetti, Martina Melani and Roberta Russo, was the best ever. With the highest score, the redevelopment work of the historic center of Viterbo was awarded. The commission was impressed “for the suggestion of the path of the city’s waters, following the ditch of the Urcionio, with modern architectural motifs that blend well with the historic buildings already present”.
Just thewater represents for Viterbo a very important and significant element, something that has greatly marked its history and especially its economy. At the moment, however, the city is not crossed by visible waterways, because the Urcionio stream flows in the underground city. Precisely this was the starting point of the project, the protagonist of the scene. This will resurface on the surface, evoking once again that ancient but firm relationship between Viterbo and water. The flow lines will be made of travertine, which is the local traditional material. This path will start from the external fountain of Porta Romana and will enter the center, passing through Piazza San Sisto: it will branch off into smaller paths and will end its course in Piazza San Lorenzo. It will be a real tourist itinerary.

In addition, there is also an important study of urban furniture designed for each single square, the dehors for commercial activities and the lighting that enhances and enriches the overall intervention.
